This virtual course is designed to provide students with an introduction to the nature of substance use and addiction impacting individuals, families, and communities. Students will be introduced to various theoretical perspectives and practices of addictions treatment while identifying special considerations for social work practice. The various mood-altering drugs will be examined, and the physical and psychosocial consequences of their use will be discussed as well as a beginning examination of the identification, assessment, and treatment.
Students will have an opportunity to focus on areas of special interest in the field of addictions and will critically reflect on their own attitudes and knowledge about substance use and addiction throughout the course seminar format bringing their findings back to the class through the use of online forums, meeting in small groups with colleagues, engaging with guest speakers & discussions in seminars.

This course examines mental health issues encountered by social work professionals with an emphasis on practice and policy implications. Students will have an opportunity to explore the context of practice and critically examine the current mental health delivery system. The role of the social work professional and professional interventions will be examined.
