Tonal Music I is a hands-on study of the vocabulary and grammar of tonal music. A focus on harmonic practices in Western music forms the foundation for development of general musicianship skills, including basic keyboard skills, sight singing, and aural skills (ear training).

Assignments include exercises in four-voice harmony in keyboard and chorale styles, basic melody writing and harmonization, rhythmic and melodic dictation, formal analysis, and solfege, as well as elementary keyboard technical exercises. Students are expected to frequently sing and/or play assignments in class.

Prerequisites: FNAR 1023 or FNAR 1743 , or permission by the instructor.
