What is sociology? What kind of topics do sociologists study? How do sociologists go about conducting research? These are just some of the questions that we will explore throughout this six-credit course. In this course, students will be introduced to sociological theories and concepts that help us to better understand the social world around us as well as our place within it. In order to provide a foundation for later coursework in sociology, we will survey a range of different topics and identify key theoretical and methodological approaches used in the discipline. Course topics include: social control, social change, the family, education, media, gender, sexuality, disability, inequality, employment, etc.
