In this course, you will be introduced to the science of archaeology, the different kinds of evidence we use, and how we understand what we are seeing when we look at the archaeological record. We will cover how to date objects and events in the past; what we can learn using archaeology, and what we cannot; how our discipline has evolved through time; how to interpret artifacts and other forms of evidence; and the methods and techniques we use to conduct field and lab research. We will use these subjects to focus on specific archaeological discoveries—some you’ve doubtless heard of, and some you probably haven’t—and use these examples to become familiar with some of the most important debates and perspectives in archaeology.
