This is a mandatory course for all BSW students. Concepts in policy planning are studied, along with an examination of the process of planned change from problem identification to programming. Canadian social work educators, Brad McKenzie and Brian Wharf (2016) assert that the continuing history of colonization demands a different approach to policymaking: “…policies and programs that are infused with Indigenous knowledge and traditions” (McKenzie & Wharf, 2016, p. 237). This course will examine the continuing effects of colonization and emphasize the importance of Indigenous approaches to policy and practice.
