This course prepares students to understand and critically use research in evaluating direct and indirect social work practice. In addition to critically reviewing the theoretical underpinnings of social work practice, there will be an emphasis on integrating research and practice. Relevant qualitative methods for social work practice will be explored.

Class time will be used to introduce and critically explore these theories and developments and their application to social work practice. Through this process, students will be encouraged to clarify and articulate their own assumptions and beliefs, their approach to social work research, and their ability to operationalize their approach in social work at the individual, group, and community levels.
