This course examines a wide selection of texts from Canadian writers. Our discussions will trace the origins of Canadian poetry from the eighteenth century through to the present day. Our texts will act as springboards for discussions of (a) themes, topics, styles, characters, languages, and movements; (b) the historical context within which the work was written; and (c) the relevant critical lenses through which our text may be considered. Our goal is to immerse ourselves within the texts that shape the Canadian landscape, work to define the “Canadian voice”, and engage with the writers who have worked to shape the history of Canadian poetry.
