• When you are given the name and contact information of a student you are to tutor coach, email that student immediately to set up an initial meeting. If you do not get a response within one week, email the student again and inform Student Accessibility Services. It is best practice to copy SAS in on all email correspondence with a student. It is always a good practice to keep a record of communication.
  • During the first appointment, you should use the student’s course outlines to develop a plan for the semester. Help the student to start on assignments early and to stay on track.
  • Remember, you are not a subject-specific tutor. You are not expected to know all the subject matter covered for the course. Instead, your role is to build and support general academic skills such as organization, time management, studying, writing, and editing.
  • You may choose to schedule one long session per week or several shorter sessions. It will be left up to you and the student.
  • You are required to attend an initial information session with SAS to sign the tutor coach agreement and get instructions on all relevant policies and procedures.
  • Tutor coaches must first be registered as an employee with Financial Services (George Martin Hall room 103). If you have worked previously as a student employee at St.Thomas University, you should already be registered, but it is suggested that you verify that all the information on record is correct and up-to-date. You will need to provide the Financial Services office a void cheque or direct deposit form from your financial institution.
  • You must pass in a time sheet to Student Accessibility Services every two weeks. Instructions are on the time sheets. Blank time sheets are available from Financial Services office (George Martin Hall room 103). If you have any questions, please contact the Student Accessibility Office.
  • Although a student may be approved for a specific number of hours, you may only bill for the number of hours worked.
  • If a student doesn’t show up or cancels without 24 hours notice, you may bill for one hour (regardless of how many hours were scheduled).
  • Tutor Coaches paid by STU earn $10.40 (minimum wage plus 4% vacation pay). Tutor Coaches of students who have received a Canada Study Grant from the Government of Canada may earn higher wages depending on the tutor’s qualifications and experience.
  • If a Canada Study Grant is not yet confirmed, the Tutor Coach receives the legislated minimum wage. If/when SAS receives notification of a Canada Study Grant, the tutor coach will be paid at a retroactively adjusted remuneration rate.
