This is the capstone course for students majoring in Journalism. The objective of the course is to continue to explore the work of journalism in open societies, and the range and possibilities of journalism in the digital age. The course will develop writing and storytelling skills that graduates will carry with them into professional newsrooms or whatever careers and further studies they pursue.
Students will use what they have learned in the development, reporting and completion of stories in the medium of their choice. At the end of the course students will have completed a professional online portfolio of work.

This is an experiential learning course for Journalism students. During the academic year, students will pursue various internships or work in campus media groups to gain professional experience and make a contribution to their community before graduation. Students will participate in professional development workshops and complete a series of writing assignments to reflect what they have learned through their experience. Each student will create an online portfolio that will reflect their work and experience during their time at St. Thomas University.

STUDENTS ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR FINDING COMMUNICATIONS-RELATED INTERNSHIPS WITH LOCAL ORGANIZATIONS INCLUDING GOVERNMENT AGENCIES, NON-PROFITS, CHARITIES OR START-UPS. THEY MUST COMPLETE TWO INTERNSHIPS DURING THE ACADEMIC YEAR, EACH REQUIRING 40-60 HOURS OF WORK OR ONE INTERNSHIP OF 80-120 HOURS OR A SUMMER JOB IN COMMUNICATIONS APPROVED BY THE INSTRUCTOR. THEIR WORK WILL BE EVALUATED BY THEIR HOST-EMPLOYER . THEY WILL REPORT TO THE CLASS ON THEIR EXPERIENCES AND SUBMIT A WRITTEN ACCOUNT TO THE INSTRUCTOR.
